The Surface safety valve unit is a failsafe-closed hydraulic actuated gate valve used  for well testing on offshore and land operations. The surface safety valve is located upstream of the choke manifold and when activated prevents the backflow of well effluent int he event of flow-line rupture between the surface test tree and the choke manifold

Failure of the energy source or any component must cause the system to shut in the well at one or more points.The surface safety valves are operated by Emergency shutdown-ESD system, which allows remote activation of the valve at several strategically located stations throughout the rig-site and well test process areas.
